CJ was born and raised at Haystack Mountain GC and he started playing golf at the age of five. As a junior competitor, he won the Dale Douglass Classic in Fort Morgan two years in a row. He also qualified to play in the USGA Jr. Amateur in 1986. He then attended Midland College in Texas and Pheiffer College in North Carolina on golf scholarships.
After college, CJ worked for Swing Sync U.S.A. (a precision custom golf equipment manufacture) learning the fundamentals of club making to become their production supervisor for all U. S. sales. While working at Swing Sync, he also became a golf instructor for Doc Suttie (a nationally ranked top ten golf instructor) at Peggy Kirk Bell’s famed Pine Needles golf course in Southern Pines, NC.
In 1996, CJ returned to Haystack Mountain GC to begin “The No Embarrassment Golf School”. His philosophy was to provide an atmosphere for beginners and struggling golfers that was non‐ threatening and fun.
In 2000, CJ refined his game under the tutelage of Phil Ritson (renowned instructor for professionals at Orange County National GC in Winter Garden Florida).
From 2001‐2007, CJ competed on the mini tour circuits in Florida and North Carolina while refining the art of custom club making.
In 2008, CJ returned to Haystack Mountain GC as the Director of Instruction and Club Making bringing his diverse skills and knowledge of instruction and club making back to his home course. CJ believes that properly fitted clubs are critical for player development and success at any level. He invites all Haystack golfers to a free consultation of his services.
Steven Earl Miller, M.A.
Head Golf Instructor
Steve is a recent graduate of Naropa University’s Masters Program in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology. He offers the ability to teach the physical/mechanical aspects of the game as well as its mental, emotional and spiritual elements.
Steve began his relationship to the game of golf at a very early age. He built a small golf course in his backyard at the age of 7, became a caddy at the age of 11, was selected as the golf team captain in his freshman year of high school, and received the Evans Scholarship (a full-ride scholarship provided to caddies who excel in scholarship, leadership and extra-curricular activities) in his senior year of high school.
Steve attended The University of Michigan on the Evans Scholarship and graduated with a BA in English. Following school, Steve temporarily left behind his dream of playing on the PGA Tour and went to work as a teacher and “at-risk” youth counselor for a number of years.
Steve returned to the game five years later and began working as an Assistant Golf Professional in Michigan and made the trip down to Florida to keep his game sharp over the winter. In his lengthy golf career, Steve has worked at The TPC at Heron Bay in Coral Springs, FL, The Moors Golf Club in Portage, MI, The Links of Novi in Novi, MI, The Orchards Golf Course in Washington, MI, Orchard Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake, MI and Edgewood CC in Commerce Township, MI.
After three years of grad school, Steve is excited to be at Haystack Mountain Golf Course and back into the game of golf. With his degree in Psychology and years of experience in the game, he believes that he offers a unique combination of skills that enable him to help golfers to improve their games and their lives. |
